Golf cart insurance

Whether your golf cart stays on private property or you plan to drive it on a locally approved street, the right insurance depends on where, how and by whom it is used. Muslow Insurance helps Shreveport–Bossier owners review available golf cart coverage options.

Start with how the cart is used

A golf cart is not automatically covered like a car

Homeowners and auto policies may restrict coverage for golf carts, particularly when they leave certain premises or are operated on roads. A separate golf cart policy or available endorsement may be appropriate. The correct approach depends on your existing insurance, the vehicle and its actual use.

Private property

Home, acreage or recreational property

Tell the insurer where the cart is stored and used, and whether it leaves the insured property. Do not assume your homeowners policy provides off-premises liability or damage coverage.

Street use

Neighborhood or locally designated roads

Insurance eligibility and legal permission are separate questions. Even a modified or registered cart cannot use an ordinary public street unless applicable law and local authorization permit it.

Golf cart, low-speed vehicle or UTV?

Louisiana R.S. 32:299.4 defines a golf cart for its roadway rules as an electric, four-wheeled vehicle intended for off-road use on golf courses or green spaces, with a maximum speed of 25 mph. Gas-powered carts, low-speed vehicles, higher-speed modified carts and UTVs may be treated differently under the law and by insurers. Provide the make, model, power source, maximum speed and intended use. For ATVs and side-by-sides, see our Motorcycle & ATV Insurance page.

Coverage questions that matter

Four things to check before choosing a policy

Keep the review focused on the situations in which a golf cart owner could discover a coverage gap.

01

Liability for an accident

Ask what applies if the cart injures someone or damages another person's property, including where the policy permits operation and who is an insured driver.

02

Damage, theft and weather

Some golf cart programs offer optional physical damage coverage. Confirm which causes of loss, deductibles and limits apply to the cart itself.

03

Drivers, passengers and location

Disclose who will drive the cart, where it is kept and whether it is used on a golf course, at a community or on a public road. Eligibility and coverage may change with those details.

04

Upgrades and commercial use

Lift kits, custom seats, added equipment, rental activity and business use may affect underwriting or coverage. Identify them before purchasing a policy rather than assuming they are included.

Louisiana-specific guidance

Insurance does not make a golf cart street legal

Under Louisiana R.S. 32:299.4, golf carts generally cannot operate on public roads. The statute allows certain designated parish roads or municipal streets, with posted authorization, and a limited permitted state-highway crossing. Local governments can impose additional rules or prohibit operation.

For permitted operation under that statute, requirements include a valid driver's license, specified safety equipment, registration and liability insurance meeting the applicable minimums. These conditions do not authorize driving on an undesignated subdivision street. Confirm the current local rules before using a cart on a roadway.

Bossier Parish example: Ordinance No. 4818 (2021) designated certain roads in the Forest Hills subdivision and established additional inspection and permit requirements. That published designation does not mean every nearby street is approved—or that a designation remains unchanged. For a route in Shreveport, Bossier City, Benton, Haughton or elsewhere in Northwest Louisiana, confirm which local government controls the road and check its current authorization and signage.

Practical answers

Golf Cart Insurance FAQs

Focused questions for golf cart owners in Shreveport, Bossier City and surrounding Northwest Louisiana communities.

Does my homeowners insurance cover my golf cart?

Possibly in limited circumstances, depending on the policy, where the cart is used and the type of loss. Liability away from the insured premises and damage to the cart may be restricted or excluded. Have the actual homeowners policy reviewed rather than assuming the golf cart is covered.

Can I drive a golf cart on a Shreveport–Bossier neighborhood street?

Only if the road is authorized under applicable law. Bossier Parish Ordinance No. 4818 (2021) listed certain Forest Hills subdivision roads and imposed additional requirements, but it does not authorize every neighborhood street in Shreveport, Bossier City or surrounding communities. Confirm current road designations, posted signs and local requirements before driving.

Is liability insurance required for a street-operated golf cart?

Louisiana R.S. 32:299.4 requires liability insurance meeting the state's applicable minimum limits for a golf cart lawfully operated on a designated parish road or municipal street. Insurance alone does not authorize roadway use; registration, equipment, licensing and local rules also matter.

Will golf cart insurance pay if my cart is stolen or damaged in a storm?

Only if the policy includes applicable physical damage coverage and the loss meets its terms. Ask about theft, weather-related damage, covered locations, deductibles and settlement limits. A liability-only policy does not insure damage to your own cart.

Can my child or an unlicensed person drive our golf cart?

Do not assume so. Louisiana requires a valid driver's license for golf cart operation on designated public roads, and insurers may have separate driver eligibility restrictions even on private property. Always follow applicable law and the issued policy's requirements.

Are lifted golf carts or carts with upgraded seats covered?

They may be eligible with some insurers, but modifications can affect acceptance, valuation and coverage. Disclose lift kits, extra seating, upgraded batteries, custom equipment and speed changes when requesting a quote. Added equipment is not automatically insured for its full cost.

Are gas-powered golf carts and low-speed vehicles treated the same?

Not necessarily. Louisiana R.S. 32:299.4 defines a golf cart for its roadway exception as an electric, four-wheeled vehicle designed for off-road golf-course or green-space use with a maximum speed of 25 mph. Gas-powered carts, low-speed vehicles and modified or higher-speed vehicles can have different legal requirements and insurance eligibility. Share the cart's power source, maximum speed, make, model and modifications so its classification can be checked.

What does Muslow Insurance need to quote my golf cart?

Typically, the cart's make, model, year, power source, approximate value, maximum speed, serial number or VIN, location, modifications, planned use and driver information. Insurer requirements vary, and quoting does not bind or change coverage. Contact Muslow for available options.

Review Louisiana law and one Bossier Parish example; local designations and requirements must be checked for the exact road.

These official and regulatory sources provide background, including a 2021 local ordinance that may have been amended. They do not establish current authorization for a particular road, driver, vehicle or insurance policy. Confirm the rules directly with the responsible local authority and review the actual policy.
