Personal umbrella insurance

A serious liability claim can exceed the limits on an auto or homeowners policy. Muslow Insurance helps Shreveport–Bossier households compare personal umbrella policies and understand how they work with existing coverage.

Extra liability protection · Coordinated policies

An umbrella policy is an additional layer—not a replacement

A personal umbrella policy usually sits above qualifying underlying policies. The first question is not just the limit you want, but which underlying policies and exposures the umbrella policy can actually recognize.

Auto liability

Above eligible auto insurance

If you are legally responsible for a serious covered vehicle accident, an umbrella policy may respond after the applicable auto liability coverage is exhausted, subject to its terms.

Home and personal liability

Above eligible home or other liability policies

An umbrella policy may extend liability limits over qualifying homeowners or other personal policies. Coverage depends on the insured people, locations, activities and underlying insurance.

Understand the difference between an umbrella policy and excess liability

Both can provide limits above other liability insurance, but an umbrella policy may address some specified claims not covered by an underlying policy, sometimes subject to a self-insured retention. An excess policy may more closely follow the underlying contract. The policy wording—not the marketing name—determines what is covered.

Muslow Insurance can review eligible personal umbrella policies and excess liability options through insurers it represents, but no policy is guaranteed to accept every driver, vehicle, rental property or other exposure.

Compare the actual proposal

Six details worth checking before choosing an umbrella policy

The best comparison considers more than the premium or the headline $1 million limit. It verifies that the policy fits the people, property and exposures you actually have.

01

Underlying limits and gaps

Review the liability limits on current auto, homeowners and other policies. An umbrella insurer may require higher underlying limits or impose a coverage gap if required limits are not maintained.

02

Every driver and vehicle

List household drivers, young drivers, owned and regularly used vehicles, and other relevant operators. Undisclosed vehicles or drivers can create significant eligibility or coverage problems.

03

Homes and rental locations

Confirm primary and secondary homes, rental properties, ownership by an LLC or trust, and any other property exposures. A personal umbrella policy does not automatically include every address.

04

Watercraft and recreation

Tell the insurer about boats, personal watercraft, motorcycles, golf carts and other recreational exposures. Each may need an eligible underlying policy or may be excluded.

05

Defense costs and exclusions

Ask who handles a lawsuit, when defense obligations begin, whether costs reduce limits, and how personal-injury, intentional-act, business and contractual exclusions apply.

06

Limit, retention and price

Compare available umbrella policy limits, insurer underwriting, any retained amount, premium and material conditions. An inexpensive quote is not equivalent if it excludes a major household exposure.

How the layers interact

A larger limit is useful only when the policies line up

Consider a hypothetical covered liability claim totaling $700,000. If an eligible underlying policy pays its $300,000 applicable liability limit, a qualifying $1 million umbrella policy might address some or all of the remaining $400,000, subject to the umbrella policy terms. This example illustrates how limits may layer; it is not a coverage determination or promise of payment.

Problems can arise when a required underlying limit is too low, a liability exposure is excluded, an additional property is not accepted, or the underlying coverage has lapsed. These are reasons to compare declarations, coverage forms and underwriting requirements together, rather than shopping for an umbrella policy in isolation.

Defense costs can also matter in a large claim. Confirm what the insurer agrees to defend and how any defense expense interacts with limits, retentions and other insurance.

Real-life liability questions

Three situations that deserve a closer look

These examples show why the details behind your household matter more than a generic promise of extra protection.

A serious multi-vehicle crash

Liability after a severe collision can include injuries to several people and costly property damage. Ask whether the drivers, vehicles and current auto limits satisfy the umbrella policy’s requirements.

A guest injured at a property

A claim arising at a home, secondary residence or rental property raises questions about which liability policy applies and whether that location was accepted under the umbrella policy.

A boat or recreational exposure

Some insurers consider eligible watercraft or other recreational liability, while others impose size, horsepower, operator or separate-policy rules. Never assume inclusion.

These are illustrative circumstances, not guarantees. A claim must meet the insuring agreement and all applicable conditions and exclusions before any coverage is available.

Policy wording matters

Five umbrella policy provisions that deserve attention

Umbrella policies are not one uniform product. Review the form, schedule of underlying policies, endorsements and coverage conditions.

01 / Review point

Required underlying insurance

The umbrella policy may require specified liability limits and qualifying policies for each vehicle or property. Ask what happens if an underlying policy is cancelled or drops below the required amount.

02 / Review point

Excluded activities and insureds

Paid work, professional services, intentional harm, certain vehicles and other activities may be excluded. Confirm exactly who qualifies as an insured under the umbrella policy.

03 / Review point

Personal injury and reputation claims

Some umbrella policy forms offer certain personal-injury liability protections, such as specified defamation or privacy-related claims. The definitions and exclusions vary significantly.

04 / Review point

Retained limit and defense provisions

If a covered exposure has no applicable underlying policy, a self-insured retention may apply. Whether and how the insurer defends a claim must be confirmed in the contract.

05 / Review point

UM/UIM and household changes

Louisiana has specific uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) requirements for umbrella and excess policies covering qualifying motor-vehicle liability. Do not assume UM/UIM protection is included or excluded: review the insurer’s coverage terms and any required selection or rejection forms. Notify the insurer when drivers, homes, vehicles or other exposures change.

Shreveport–Bossier guidance

Umbrella decisions for Northwest Louisiana households

Muslow Insurance can help coordinate a local household’s liability picture, from everyday auto and home policies to additional properties and recreational activities.

Northwest Louisiana households

Teen and multi-driver households

A household with several drivers can have meaningful auto liability exposure. List licensed residents and other regular vehicle operators to help identify underwriting issues.

Shreveport and Bossier City

Primary and additional properties

Owners of homes, secondary residences or rental houses should identify the correct insured, property use and liability limits. A rental may need a separate landlord policy.

Regional recreation

Boats, off-road vehicles and golf carts

Weekend boating and recreational use can affect umbrella policy eligibility. Check how the umbrella policy treats each exposure, not just what the separate specialty policy covers.

Muslow Insurance serves Shreveport, Bossier City, Benton, Haughton, Stonewall, Minden, Vivian and surrounding communities. Insurance terms and availability depend on the insurer and individual underwriting.

Personal Umbrella Insurance FAQs

Questions about liability limits, eligible household exposures, underlying policies and the terms to review before requesting a quote.

What does a personal umbrella policy add to my auto and homeowners insurance?

A personal umbrella policy may provide additional liability limits after the applicable coverage of an underlying auto, homeowners or other eligible policy is used. Some policies also address certain liability claims not covered by an underlying policy, subject to a retention and specific terms. It does not replace the underlying policy or cover every type of loss.

Can I get umbrella insurance if my home and auto are with different carriers?

Possibly. Some insurers permit qualifying underlying policies with different companies; others impose carrier, coverage or bundling requirements. Muslow Insurance can review eligible options through its represented markets after checking each existing policy.

What underlying auto and home liability limits are required?

There is no single minimum that applies to every umbrella insurer. Many require specified bodily-injury, property-damage and homeowners liability limits before an umbrella policy can be issued. Requirements can also apply to other vehicles and properties. We review the actual carrier requirements rather than assuming a standard amount.

Does a personal umbrella policy cover a lawsuit after a serious car accident?

It may provide additional liability protection when you are legally responsible for a covered auto-related claim and the applicable underlying policy limits have been exhausted. Whether it responds depends on the covered autos, drivers, liability allegations, exclusions and policy conditions. It does not automatically cover every accident or driver.

Will an umbrella policy cover a rental property I own?

Not automatically. Rental properties, ownership entities and underlying landlord liability policies must be disclosed and reviewed. A personal umbrella policy may accept certain qualifying rental exposures, but some situations need separate excess liability or commercial coverage.

Are swimming pools, dogs, boats and teenage drivers automatically covered?

No. These exposures can affect underwriting, required underlying liability coverage and exclusions. Identify all household drivers and disclose pools, animals, owned boats, recreational vehicles and other relevant activities so the insurer can decide what is eligible.

Does umbrella insurance pay for damage to my own home or vehicle?

Generally, no. Personal umbrella insurance addresses eligible liability claims against insured persons; it is not a substitute for homeowners dwelling coverage or auto comprehensive and collision coverage. Your own physical-damage claims require review under the appropriate policy.

Does umbrella insurance cover my business or professional liability?

Personal umbrella policies generally are not intended to insure business or professional liability. Some limited incidental activities may receive special treatment, but coverage cannot be assumed. Disclose any home business, rental activity, side work or business ownership and ask whether commercial coverage is appropriate.

Does a personal umbrella policy include uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage?

Louisiana law can require UM coverage under an umbrella or excess policy that covers qualifying motor-vehicle liability, subject to valid rejection or other permitted selections. Umbrella liability and UM/UIM protection are different coverages. Review the carrier’s terms and any applicable Louisiana UM forms before deciding whether excess UM/UIM coverage is part of the issued policy.

Will my umbrella policy pay legal defense costs in addition to the policy limit?

Defense provisions differ by contract. Some policies provide specified defense protection for eligible covered claims, but how costs interact with limits and underlying insurers depends on the wording. Compare defense obligations, exclusions and any retained limit before choosing coverage.

How much personal umbrella insurance can I buy in Louisiana?

Many insurers offer umbrella policy limits starting at $1 million, with higher limits potentially available. Eligibility and available limits depend on underlying insurance, household drivers, property, losses, exposures and insurer guidelines. The appropriate limit is a personal decision that should be made after reviewing these details.

What does Muslow Insurance need to prepare an umbrella insurance quote?

Provide the current auto and homeowners liability declarations, the names and ages of household drivers, other vehicles, residential or rental properties, any watercraft or recreational vehicles, and material liability claims or exposures. Muslow Insurance can then review applicable options with represented insurers. A quote request does not bind coverage.
